Water Planning and Projects Wing

This wing is responsible for dealing with matters related to National Water policy; overall planning and development of river basins including integrated river basin planning and development, monitoring of storage position of the important reservoirs; techno-economic appraisal of Water Resources Projects including projects for assistance from external agencies and assistance to the States in the formulation and implementation of projects; monitoring of on-going major, medium & Extension Renovation & Modernisation (ERM) irrigation projects for identification of bottlenecks to achieve the targeted benefits; environmental issues related to water resources projects; irrigation planning; soil conservation, anti-waterlogging measures, reclamation of alkaline and saline soils; application of remote sensing technologies in water resources and related activities; water rights and inter state disputes among different states for the conservation and utilisation of water resources; issues related to construction machinery planning, evaluation and manpower planning aspects and silting of reservoirs.

The Wing is headed by an engineering officer designated as Member (WP&P) with the ex-officio status of Additional Secretary to Government of India. The wing comprises of organisations headed by Chief Engineer and consisting of various Directorates each headed by Directors. Below is the organisation chart of WP&P wing

39th Meeting of the National Committee on Dam Safety (NCDS) under Chairmanship of Chairman, CWC being held at Bhubaneswar on 11 February 2019.


Chairman, Central Water Commission handed over Emergency Action Plan document of Hirakud Dam to Principal Secretary, Odisha Water Resources Department on January 10 , 2019 at Rajiv Bhawan, Bhubaneswar. The EAP has been prepared under DRIP to act as model document for other Dam owners.
